“Both the philosopher and the poet find themselves describing Eros in images of wings and metaphors of flying, for desire is a movement that carries yearning hearts from over here to over there, launching the mind on a story. In the city without desire such flights are unimaginable. Wings are kept clipped. The known and the unknown learn to align themselves one behind the other so that, provided you are positioned at the proper angle, they seem to be one and the same.”
– Anne Carson, Eros the Bittersweet, 1986

Both the Pioneer plaques and the Voyager Golden Records were conceived as representations intended to transcend time, carrying a message of who we were into the cosmos.
Yet such attempts are inherently paradoxical. As no single message can represent humanity in its entirety, and any image is inevitably shaped by the values, politics, and perspectives of those who create it at that specific time. Furthermore, these messages are unlikely to reach another civilisation within our lifetime; if they are ever received, it will be long after their senders have disappeared. In this sense, METI (Messaging Extraterrestrial Intelligence) projects function less as communication and more as time capsules, preserving a particular moment’s understanding of itself.
In response, #whatsinmybag ¿? take the opposite approach. Rather than attempting a timeless representation of humanity, they focus on the chaotic and highly specific nature of contemporary life. The series record the contents of an everyday bag; objects carried, used, collected, and depended upon. Together, they form an accidental portrait of the present and reveal what we consider important enough to carry.
Terra Findings, Cycle 3026 ~ 3027 is a speculative text written from the perspective of an extraterrestrial research institute that encounters these plates alongside fragments of previous transmissions from Earth. Inspired by the Fermi Paradox (if the universe is vast and potentially filled with life, why does it appear so silent?) the text proposes a possible answer. Through the alien researchers’ attempts to interpret the recovered objects and signals, conclusions are drawn about human behaviour, cognition, communication, and self-representation.
